Superheavy-element spectroscopy: Correlations along element 115 decay chains

Following a brief summary of the region of the heaviest atomic nuclei yet created in the laboratory, data on more than hundred α-decay chains associated with the production of element 115 are combined to investigate time and energy correlations along the observed decay chains. Several of these are analysed using a new method for statistical assessments of lifetimes in sets of decay chains.

Spectroscopy of element 115 decay chains.

A high-resolution α, x-ray, and γ-ray coincidence spectroscopy experiment was conducted at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung. Thirty correlated α-decay chains were detected following the fusion-evaporation reaction 48Ca + 243Am. The observations are consistent with previous assignments of similar decay chains to originate from element Z=115. For the first time, precise spectrosc...

Perturbative Corrections to Photon Coincidence Spectroscopy Perturbative Corrections to Photon Coincidence Spectroscopy 2

Whereas photon coincidence spectroscopy is a promising technique for probing the nonlinear regime of cavity quantum electrodynamics in the optical domain, the accuracy is mitigated by two factors: higher–order photon correlations, which contribute to an enhanced pair count rate, and non– simultaneity of emitted photon pairs from the optical cavity. We show that the technique of photon coinciden...

Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy of Nuclei Along the Z=115 Decay Chain

During the past decade correlated α-decay chains have been observed in several independent experiments using Ca-induced fusion-evaporation reactions on actinide targets [1]. These are interpreted to originate from the production of isotopes with proton numbers Z = 113-118. In a recent experiment at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH in Darmstadt, Germany, using the reaction ...

Multi-coincidence spectroscopy on interatomic Coulombic decay

The inner-shell ionized states in matter are subject to Auger decay. Auger spectra are considered as fingerprint images of the atom where the inner-shell hole is created. About a decade ago, Cederbaum and coworkers [1] proposed a new mechanism of electronic decay where the environment plays a role. For an isolated atom or molecule with an innervalence vacancy, Auger decay is often energetically...
